Preserve the past for the future
The re-development of Abingdon County Hall Museum’s facilities will inform and excite the ever-increasing interest of the 21st century public in exploring its long past.
Extensive repairs and conservation are needed to preserve this 17th century, Grade 1 listed building, which houses the the Museum's collections.
Plans for this purpose are underway, and also to upgrade facilities, redisplay the collection in enhanced conditions and improve accessibility.
This £3.5 million project has attracted funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and others, but a further £400,000 is needed.
Some of the renovations we are raising money for include:
- A fully preserved building, secure and meeting all safety requirements
- Appropriate temperature control for the benefit of the collection, and all who use the building
- Increased accessibility
- The cellar as a public community space, accessible to all, with coffee bar, shop and toilets, a room and facilities for community use and education, and a place where physically impaired visitors can access the collection using modern equipment
- The restored 1906 gas-powered engines and water pump on display
- The Sessions Gallery, permanently exhibiting Abingdon's history, plus interactive and sophisticated displays and temporary exhibitions
- The second floor housing an MG exhibition, the historic craft collection, the reserve collection, facilities for study and a fully equipped office
- External uplighting both within and outside the arcade, and full CCTV
- Increased numbers of visitors and links to the local community
